Information Services for Visually Impaired Georgians
This release went out today. Many thanks to the dedicated group of people who helped make this happen.
Adelman program for the visually impaired to be available June 1
ATLANTA- Legislation written by Sen. David Adelman (D-Decatur) during the 2005 legislative session has resulted in new state-of-the-art telecommunications tools for Georgia’s visually impaired citizens. The new statewide program allows Georgians who are visually impaired to obtain audio copies of newspapers, magazines and journals via telephone.
Under Sen. Adelman’s legislation, the Georgia Audible Universal Information Access Service (AUIAS) will be available to all blind and print-disabled citizens on June 1, 2006. To use the service, citizens must apply with the National Federation for the Blind (NFB) and obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access the service, which is provided at no cost to eligible citizens.
"This new equipment and program will allow visually impaired Georgians to more fully participate in educational and employment opportunities,†said Sen. Adelman. “I could not be more proud of what we’ve done to improve the lives of visually impaired Georgians.â€Â
For years, Georgia's telecommunications network has included a program providing assistance to people with hearing and speech impairments. Without adding any new surcharge or tax, Sen. Adelman's bill expanded the program to provide services to visually impaired Georgians. The new system will be paid for with excess funds available from the successful programs for the hearing and speech impaired.
“The legislation puts technology to work for visually impaired people across Georgia,†stated Sen. Adelman, announcing his appreciation of the Public Service Commission for their efforts to improve the lives of Georgia’s blind and visually impaired population. “The program is ahead of schedule and under budget," he added.
Officials at the PSC announced that they have worked diligently with vendors and technicians to ready an audible telecommunications system to be made available to Georgia’s blind and visually impaired citizens.
“The Public Service Commission did a great job of implementing the law. It’s great to see government work efficiently,†added Sen. Adelman.
The legislation creating the assistance program passed on the final day of the 2005 session. Sen. Adelman was awarded the Sighted Guide Award from the National Federation for the Blind for taking the lead to create this program.

Thank you to the students and parents who attended. And, especially, thank you to the seven educators who were recognized with Senate Resolutions for their more than 25 years of devoted service to the children of Georgia. //David
Teachers
As the school year ends, I want to express my sincere thanks to the many devoted school teachers in Senate District 42. This year, I introduced dozens of Resolutions in the state Senate honoring those teachers at schools in our district who have taught for more than 25 years. Last week, I visited McClendon Elementary School and enjoyed their annual talent show. I was pleased to present Resolutions to three McClendon teachers durnig the evenings events. A few weeks ago, I spoke at the Towers High School PTSA meeting and presented Resolutions honoring eight teachers each of whom have taught for more than 25 years. As we enter the Summer recess, I hope we will all take the opportunity to thank the many committed teachers at our local schools.
